INNOVISION Consulting presents the findings of its “Urban Mobility Study: Rickshaws in Transition,” examining the rapid transformation of Dhaka’s rickshaw sector and its implications for urban mobility.
Battery-powered rickshaws, often referred to as “Bangla Teslas”, have quickly become a dominant mode of short-distance transport in Dhaka. Their rapid expansion has sparked growing public and policy debates around traffic congestion, road safety, employment dynamics, and regulatory challenges.
Amid this transition, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have initiated a BUET-approved battery-powered rickshaw pilot project, signaling a potential shift toward formal recognition and structured regulation of battery-powered rickshaws in the city.
To better understand what is driving this shift and what it means for key stakeholders, INNOVISION Consulting conducted a comprehensive urban mobility study drawing on primary data collected from rickshaw drivers, passengers, and garage owners across Dhaka (DNCC & DSCC). The study explores the social, economic, and mobility-related implications of the transition from pedal rickshaws to battery-powered alternatives.
The findings of the study presented and discussed on 18 January 2026, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and civil society representatives to reflect on the future of rickshaws within Dhaka’s urban transport system.
